Random Fact Tuesday.

In honor of feeling like crap for the 5th day in a row, I have dedicated today’s random facts to sickness.  Yay! I say that sarcastically.  I haven’t been able to run and my head is killing me.  Stupid cold.

  • Cold germs can survive for up to 3 hours outside of the nasal passage.
  • Even with today’s powerful antibiotics, bacterial pneumonia is the most common complication of the flu, and most flu-related deaths are due to it
  • Ice cream headaches are no myth – you really can get them from eating this frozen dessert. This is caused by blood vessel spasms, which are caused by the intense cold from the ice cream. The spasms interrupt the blood flow and cause the vessels to swell.
  • There is no vaccine for the common cold, since there are more then 100 different viruses that can result in a cold.
  • Most children who get migraines, have at least one close family member who suffers from migraines too. If a child has one parent who suffers from migraines, they have a 50% chance of getting them too, if both are sufferers, this rises to 75%.
  • Colds are more common during seasonal changes when humidity is low.
  • Common symptoms of a cold are runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throats and watery eyes.
  • The common cold is also known as a viral upper respiratory tract infection.
  • The cost of treating annual flu epidemics, including lost wages and productivity of workers, is billions of dollars each year in just the United States alone.
  • In contrast to respirators, face masks (surgical, dental, isolation, or laser masks) do not form a tight seal around the face and block only large droplets, not small viruses, from coming into contact with the wearer’s mouth and nose.
  • Viruses are between 20 and 100 times smaller than bacteria and can be seen only through a microscope
  • Even with today’s powerful antibiotics, bacterial pneumonia is the most common complication of the flu, and most flu-related deaths are due to it
  • Reyes syndrome is a rare and potentially fatal disorder linked to taking aspirin during viral illnesses such as the flu
  • The first possible influenza epidemic may have occurred in Europe as early as 1173.
  • Twenty-eight million Americans suffer from migraines. Of these people, 4,5 million have more than one attack per month. A quarter of the female population is affected and about eight in every hundred men.
