Random Fact Tuesday: The Take Care of YOU Edition.

Today, I’m all about fitness and health.  It’s the beginning of a new year, we all have stupid resolutions we have to keep, and I’m kind of on a fitness kick anyway…. so on with Random Fact Tuesday- The Take Care of YOU Edition!   Let’s start this year off right!

  • Each pound of muscle (1 pound = 0.45 kilograms) burns 75-100 calories every day simply by being.
  • A Danish study claims that men and women with thighs that measure less than 23.62 inches (60 cm). in circumference have a higher risk of developing heart disease.
  • Almonds, avocados, and arugula lettuce can boost your sex drive and improve fertility
  • The number one cause of blindness in the United States is diabetes.
  • Heart drugs may have serious interactions with herbal supplements such as ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort, and garlic.  Make sure to let your doctor know all of the supplements you are taking when being prescribed something new.
  • Depression may occur in as many as 1 in 33 children and 1 in 8 teenagers in the United States. Once a child or teenage has an episode of depression, he or she has a greater than 50% chance of experiencing another episode in the next five years.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 18 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed for the common cold in the United States per year. Research shows that colds are caused by viruses. 50 million unnecessary antibiotics are prescribed for viral respiratory infections.
  • According to the results of NSF’s 2008 Sleep in America poll, 36 percent of American drive drowsy or fall asleep while driving.
  • People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to have bigger appetites due to the fact that their leptin levels (leptin is an appetite-regulating hormone) fall, promoting appetite increase.
  • Laughing relaxes and expands blood vessels, which helps protect the heart.  Laugh more, it’s good for you.
  • Iceberg lettuce has a lot less iron and other vitamins than any other sort of greener lettuce.  In general, the darker green the lettuce, the healthier.
  • Sex is the safest tranquilizer in the world. It is 10 times more effective than valium!
  • It takes 3500 calories to make a pound.
  • Smoking marijuana cigarettes increases a person’s appetite by a whopping 40%.
  • Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.
  • Even seemingly innocuous and healthy foods like breakfast cereals and waffles can be rich in trans fats. Read food labels carefully before you buy processed and ready-to-eat food.
  • Food that is fried in your home does not contain trans fats; rather, the trans fat in fried chicken and French fries is a result of the hydrogenation of liquid vegetable oil during the processing of food (manufacturers do this to boost the shelf life of these foods).
  • Canned vegetables, such as corn and peas, have more vitamins and are healthier for you than frozen vegetables.
  • Exercise increases energy levels and increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity.
  • A thirty minute jog three times each week has helped many people control weight however, there’s a difference between controlling weight and losing it.
  • Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression than men. Women may be at a higher risk for depression due in part to estrogen, which may alter the activity of neurotransmitters that contribute to depression.
